TIPS TO HELP AVOID OPEN HOUSE THEFT

Here are some simple suggestions to help avoid theft during your open house. Again, there are no guarantees, but by following these simple steps you can reduce the risk and limit the criminal's opportunity.

  • Hide your valuables AND your medications - lock them in your car trunk or rent a safety deposit box. Some banks offer them for free. A good agent will not let people wander for too long, but even the best managed open house may draw a crowd that is difficult to monitor.
  • For circuitous or complex floor plans or for those homes with multiple floors and hard to monitor entrances, request your agent to bring more people or security. Have them use radios to inform each other of movement and keep count of arrivals, departures and time on site.
  • Put away bills, credit card receipts, and bank statements. If possible, remove them and store them with your valuables.
  • Remove personal photos (especially celebrities and public figures) and anything that might identify you.
  • Or simply don't have an open house. Many real estate experts agree that it is very rare to find a real buyer from an open house. Most sales are made to people who are using an agent and request a private showing.
